Can it happen in less than a year?  Or is it a multi-year thing?

I think the downward spiral towards the end can last for quite sometime.  For me once that spiral had hit terminal velocity the ending was brutally fast.

Oh it can totally happen in less than a year.  I would say as soon as you stop being the shiny new thing, it's all over.  that can happen in a matter of weeks or months.
