Quote of the Week
“...there are a whole group of people out there that deal with some variation of what I'm dealing with...Oh my gosh -- I'm not alone! And it's so helpful to know that it's the situation we're in, it's no one's fault."

The Non-ADHD Partner’s Experience
In honor of ADHD Awareness Month, we're continuing the conversation we started last week about what it's like to have ADHD -- but with a twist this week: what it's like to be in relationship with a partner with ADHD.
You might recall I shared Dr. Christine Hargrove’s analogy: that living with ADHD can feel like running an invisible Tough Mudder while your partner jogs along on smooth pavement. I received thoughtful, candid feedback about the Non-ADHD partners' part of this experience. So this week, I want to tell the rest of the story.
Imagine those same two runners again. One is running an invisible obstacle course that looks like smooth pavement...but the other one (the Non-ADHD partner) isn’t just cruising. They’re stopping to help their partner over the walls. They’re doubling back when their partner falls behind and carrying the supplies that got left at the start. They’re steering around obstacles they didn’t create. Over time, they’re running much farther and carrying much more than they signed up for.
That’s the non-ADHD partner’s experience: remembering, managing, absorbing of consequences, and constantly adjusting. And when that goes on for years without meaningful relief, exhaustion and resentment set in.
While it's true that no one’s doing anything wrong -- meaning no one is actively trying to make the others' life harder, the impact of ADHD on both of you is still profound. It's not anyone's fault -- and you both have responsibility to shift how you approach life together once you can see the Tough Mudder (read: ADHD) for what it is.
The goal here isn’t for you both to run the same race, or have the same set of skills. It's to find your way together by honestly seeing the race for what it is, and getting good support for the parts that are particularly tricky. You don't have to do this on your own, and things *can* get better -- we see it everyday!
Thank you to the reader who pushed us to tell the whole story. ADHD partners deserve compassion, and so do the people who love them.
Wishing you all a lovely week,
Rachel and the ADHD and Marriage team
